COMMITTEES
Some of those committees are: fund raising; volunteer coordinating; Columbus Humane Society shelter liason; adoption program; foster program; animal cruelty; spay neuter, education, and reporter.
PURPOSE
Our purposes are:
1. To prevent cruelty to animals
2. Promote responsible pet ownership
3. Reduce the numbers of unwanted animals by encouraging pet owners to spay and neuter
4. Provide more opportunities for adoptions
Our goal is to find a facility where we can house rescued animals until they are adopted. In the past we have zeroed in on the cats and dogs because they seem to be in the most abundance and are indiscriminately discarded with the trash with no after thoughts. These abandoned animals need care, medical attention, and human intervention.
CURRENT PROGRAMS
Foster Program
We currently have our rescue pets housed with "foster parents" . These animals were either rescued from the shelter, picked up at various locations around the county, or dropped off at various homes. Our foster homes care for as many animals as they can accommodate and the Humane Society pays all expenses. . The idea of fostering is to take responsibility for caring for animals by feeding and sheltering them and making sure they receive their vaccinations on time. These people are sympathetic to the animal’s situation and want to help in any way they can by providing shelter, security, and the loving touch they all need..
Spay/Neuter
Our most important responsibility is to see that all the animals that are rescued are spayed or neutered before being adopted. This is clearly the only way we can assure ourselves that we will be eliminating the over population problem.
Adoption Program
After, our foster homes have given the animals the care they need, and we’ve had them spayed or neutered, they are ready for adoption. Since we provide all vaccinations and spay or neuter all our animals, we ask for a donation of $60 for all cats or kittens, $100 for dogs and $120 for puppies. We rely heavily on our PetSmart adoptions. We can be found at the Wilmington, NC PetSmart most every Saturday. We also tell people if for any reason they cannot keep the animal any longer, we would take them back. We would prefer to have to re-home them. We love them forever, not just while they are with us.
Abuse/Neglect Calls
The Humane Society also receives many calls regarding inhumane treatment to animals. Whenever we receive such calls, we immediately call the Animal Shelter and the director investigates the charge and if the accusation is true, he gives the owner 72 hours to correct the situation and if it is not corrected, he will remove the animal from the home. Just a few months ago, we received a call that a dog was chained to a tree, without food, water, or shelter and on that day, it was pouring rain. We called the Animal Shelter and reported the call and they went to the location and told the owner that she must supply the animal with shelter, food and water. When she said she couldn’t afford a doghouse, Rossie told us and we located a doghouse that could be given to the woman. She supplied the food and water, so that case was closed. Not all are so easy. Sometimes the wardens have to remove the animal from the home and take it back to the shelter. Sometimes those people don’t even care what their animal’s fate is going to be just as long as they don’t have to cope with the animal any longer.
CONCLUSION
So, you can see that the Humane Society deals with all kinds of animal related issues. We are trying to make a difference for the animals of Columbus County. It is our hope that eventually we will see a change in the way people treat their animals. We honestly feel that by making Columbus County a better place for the animals, we are making it a better place for people. Since we operate on donations, we will be holding many fund raising events throughout the year and There is another Humane Society taking the largest share of the responsibility for these animals, but the Columbus Humane Shelter has lent a hand financially.we hope you will be there to support our efforts.
